Maggie Q, star of the CW action thriller, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter recently about the second season, which continues Friday with the second episode. Speaking to Michael (Shane West) and Nikita’s newly established domestic situation, the actress revealed that things aren’t going to be simple for the couple as they go about living (and working) with Birkhoff (Aaron Stanford).
“We’ve had a whole set of new problems for them this year. They’ve escaped one thing, but they be diving into another,” she says. “There’s going to be a lot of adult problems that affect them this year.”
The Mr. & Mrs. Smith aspect to the pair’s relationship will also be explored. “I think that partnership will be fun for people to see,” she says. “Nikita’s been so alone for so long that it’s nice to do it with someone.”
And with Nikita and Alex’s relationship on the rocks (“It’s rough seas for them,” Maggie Q admits), some parts of their friendship/mentorship may not be easily fixed if and when that time comes.“There’s a lot that may or may not be able to be fixed between the two of them,” she reveals. (Case in point: Nikita shooting Alex in the premiere and breaking her arm.) “But there’s great love there. [Alex] is like a little sister. … In the end, Nikita’s intention and hope is always to have her back and want to protect her. On some level, you have to let people go sometimes.”
New characters (“a sexy new guy and a sexy new girl”) will come into the fold, one of whom viewers were already introduced to in the season opener, and in the Nikita world, they’ll cause some problems, the actress said.
Nikita airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
